Travel

Cortona is a small historical town at the border between Tuscany and Umbria. It has a large and sparkling international tourism in summer (with many hotels, B&B and Agriturismo), but it is quiet and (almost) sleeping in winter (with a reduced accommodation offer). Touristic information is here:

How to reach Cortona:

The closest international airports are Florence (FLR https://www.aeroporto.firenze.it/en/), Rome Fiumicino (FCO https://www.adr.it/web/aeroporti-di-roma-en/), Rome Ciampino (CIA, low cost companies). There is also a small airport in Perugia (PEG), the closest to Cortona, but there are few international flights.

Reaching Cortona by Train:

Cortona is served by two rail stations:

  1. Camucia-Cortona is the closest but only regional trains are stopping here
  2. Terontola-Cortona is farter, but also intercity trains are stopping here

None of them are served by high-speed trains (the closest is Arezzo), but there are trains from Rome, Florence and Perugia.  Buses and taxis are connecting these stations to the Cortona centre. Italian Railways web site: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

Reaching Cortona by Car:

Either arriving from Florence or from Rome you have to take the highway A1 exiting at the “Valdichiana” exit and then follow the indications Perugia taking the freeway toward Perugia. Then follow the indications of your GPS (it will decide which of the two Cortona exits take from the freeway). Follow the indications Cortona.

From Perugia follow the indications for Cortona of your GPS.

Parking in Cortona  centre is impossible (middle age town, not studied for the cars) but there are free parking at the basis of the historical centre; look to the map:
