About the Venue
The 4th ET General Meeting will take place at Centre Gervais in Opatija, Croatia. This cultural center occupies a site that has been intimately connected with culture since the beginning of Opatija's history.
The location where Centre Gervais now stands has a rich cultural heritage spanning over a century. In the late 19th century, as Opatija was taking its first steps as a tourist destination, this site housed a music hall built as an extension to the Hotel Stephanie (later renamed Imperial). By the end of the 19th century, it had transformed into a theater, and in the early 20th century, it became a venue for cinema projections. During the mid-20th century, the hall underwent changes and served as the city cinema until 2012, when the deteriorating building was demolished.
Today, Centre Gervais stands as an essential part of Opatija's cultural landscape, continuing the site's long tradition of hosting cultural events. The center is named after Drago Gervais, born on April 18, 1904, in Opatija. A prominent cultural figure in the region, Gervais was educated in his hometown, Sušak, Zagreb, and Ljubljana. He worked as a legal clerk and in state service, while also writing Chakavian poetry, essays, historical articles, feuilletons, short stories, dramas, and comedies. He served as drama director and intendant of what is now the Croatian National Theatre Ivan pl. Zajc in Rijeka.
As one of the most important cultural personalities in the region, it is fitting that this temple of culture bears the name of this cultural giant.
