About the Venue
The XVI ET Symposium will take place at central campus of RWTH Aachen University in the heart of the city of Aachen.
The main building of RWTH Aachen University was constructed between 1865 and 1870. The architect and construction manager was Robert Ferdinand Cremer. His father, known as the “Schinkel of Aachen,” had built the theater, the Elisenbrunnen fountain, and the old government building, which now houses the Historical Institute and the University Archives of RWTH Aachen University. At the time, Cremer was a building inspector in Aachen and was entrusted with the restoration of Aachen Cathedral. On February 9, 1864, following a proposal by Aachen's district president Friedrich Kühlwetter, Berlin's Minister of Trade, Count von Itzenplitz, awarded the construction contract for the polytechnic school to Cremer, who immediately embarked on a study trip to other polytechnic schools to draw inspiration from their buildings. After visiting the polytechnics in Karlsruhe, Stuttgart, Hanover, and Zurich, among others, he submitted two designs to the Ministry of Trade in Berlin on November 2, 1864. The first design, preferred by Aachen's district president Kühlwetter, envisaged a building in the Gothic style, while the other was in the Italian style.
