Description

"In the framework of the costitution of the Sardinia FABER Far Field Observatory funded by PNRR project MEET, a new magnetic and magnetotelluric monitoring station has recently been installed in the Mamone area. This is also a key element for the site characterization program for the Einstein Telescope (ET), to investigate the electromagnetic properties and natural magnetic noise conditions of the candidate site. The station contributes to the multidisciplinary geophysical framework aimed at assessing the environmental suitability of the region for hosting next-generation gravitational-wave observatories. The monitoring activities include continuous measurements of the geomagnetic field and broadband magnetotelluric data acquisition, allowing the characterization of both natural electromagnetic noise and subsurface electrical resistivity structures. These observations are essential for evaluating the local electromagnetic environment, identifying potential sources of anthropogenic disturbance, and improving the geological and geodynamic understanding of the area. Preliminary analyses highlight the low-noise characteristics of the site and provide initial insights into the regional conductivity structure, with implications for tectonic interpretation and underground infrastructure assessment. The integration of magnetic and magnetotelluric observations with seismic, geological, and environmental datasets represents an important step toward a comprehensive geophysical characterization of the ET candidate area.
This contribution presents the instrumentation setup, acquisition strategy, first measurement results, and the role of the MAMONE station within the broader ET site investigation activities in Sardinia"
